  12. intelligent external battery charger designed to properly recharge the Apple
  13. Computer PowerBook 500 series smart-batteries. The PowerBook 500 is the first
  14. portable computer to be using smart-batteries.

  16. The Charger 500 not only charges and reconditions the batteries of the
  17. PowerBook 500 series, but features the ability to communicate to each battery's
  18. internal Energy Monitoring Module (EMM).  This allows the Charger 500 to
  19. intelligently monitor charge rates and temperature parameters to offer the
  20. safest and fastest charging under Apple's stringient charging requirements.
  21. Other intelligent features include monitoring for all fault conditions,
  22. selective recondition on demand, and immediate indication of charge status.
  23. TimeSaver mode substantially reduces time to full-charge, providing a fully
  24. charged battery in as little a one hour.

  28. The EMM is a complete processing system internal to every battery pack which
  29. communicates to the PowerBook and Charger 500 and reports all battery
  30. conditions including charging, discharging, accurate current measurement,
  31. battery capacity calibration and self-discharge algorithms.  The Charger 500's
  32. ability to communicate with the EMM  automatically determines the battery's
  33. need to be charged, discharged, and also accurately indicates remaining run
  34. time and remaining time to full charge.  All Apple required charging and
  35. calibration protocols are implemented in full, ensuring maximum possible
  36. battery performance and cycle-life longevity.  All modes of charging are
  37. supported including pulse-maintenance mode.

  41. With bays for two batteries, Charger 500 intelligently handles all
  42. commincations and charging parameters of both batteries simultaneously.  Visual
  43. indicators (LEDs) display immediate verification of a full charge, charging
  44. status, reconditioning and error any conditions (battery fault).

  46. It's dimensions are approximately 4" x 5" x 1-1/2" with a weight of about
  47. one-half pound.  The color and design compliments that of the PowerBook 500s.
  48. It is powered by the PowerBook 500's AC Adapter, which is available as a
  49. bundled option at a special price to be announced.
